Roulette Orphelins Bet & Payout Explained

Roulette is one of the most well-known casino games. It involves a spinning wheel with numbered pockets, a small ball, and a betting table. Players place wagers on where they think the ball will land when the wheel stops. The game is based on chance, and there is no way to predict or influence the outcome.

One type of bet that some players use is the Orphelins bet. If you have not heard of this before, this guide will explain what it is, how it works, and the potential payouts. This bet is typically available in French and European Roulette, which use a single-zero wheel. It is less common in American Roulette, which has an additional double-zero (00) pocket.

If you are considering playing roulette, it may help to read the game rules and paytable. Different roulette variants can have different betting options and payout structures.

Orphelins Meaning In Roulette

In French Roulette, the term “Orphelins” means “orphans” in English. This refers to a specific set of numbers on the roulette wheel that are not included in the two larger betting sections.

French Roulette is played on a single-zero wheel, meaning it has 37 pockets numbered from 0 to 36. Unlike the Voisins du Zéro (Neighbours of Zero) and Tiers du Cylindre (Third of the Wheel) sections, which cover larger groups of numbers, the Orphelins bet consists of only eight numbers that are positioned separately on the wheel.

  • Voisins du Zéro (Neighbours of Zero): This covers numbers near 0 on the wheel.
  • Tiers du Cylindre (Third of the Wheel): This covers a separate section of numbers opposite the zero.

The Orphelins bet includes eight specific numbers:

  • 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31, and 34.

These numbers do not form a continuous section on the wheel. Instead, they are split into two small groups positioned separately.

Orphelins Bet Example

The Orphelins bet is made up of five separate bets. Each of these covers different numbers in a specific way. To place this bet, you need at least five chips or betting units. Here is how it works:

  1. A straight-up bet on number 1 (a single-number bet).
  2. Four split bets, each covering a pair of numbers:
    • 6 and 9
    • 14 and 17
    • 17 and 20
    • 31 and 34

A straight-up bet means betting on a single number. A split bet means betting on two numbers that are next to each other on the betting table. The ball needs to land on one of the chosen numbers for a bet to win.

Each of these bets is treated separately. If the ball lands on 1, only the straight-up bet wins. If the ball lands on 6, only the split bet covering 6 and 9 wins.

Roulette Orphelins Payout

Understanding the possible payouts is important, as each part of the Orphelins bet offers a different potential return.

  • Straight-up bet on 1: Pays 35 to 1. If you bet £1, you could win £35, plus your original stake back.
  • Split bets (all other numbers): Pay 17 to 1. If you bet £1 on a split, a win would return £17, plus your stake.

These are standard payouts in French and European Roulette, but it is always a good idea to check the specific game rules, as some variations may have different payout structures.

Roulette is a random game of chance. Each spin of the wheel is independent, meaning past outcomes do not influence future results.
